FAQs About Buying Art & Art Prints
What is Original Art?
Original artworks are ideas conceptualized by the artist. They can take any medium, from paint on canvas to graffiti on walls and from photography to sculptures. The materials used will be the artist's individual preference and style. Many art fans will only purchase original artworks for their collections. Prices vary dramatically, largely depending upon how well known the artist is and the popularity of their work and style. Overtime, original artworks can significantly increase in value. Some people collect as an investment, whilst others collect purely for the love of beautiful art.
What is a Certificate of Authenticity?
Certificates of Authenticity (COA) contain information on the artist, the title of the work, the media used, information about the image, the signature of the print maker, and the number and date of the edition. A Certificate of Authenticity is a useful benefit when you purchase a print. It should be kept safe as it will reinforce the artwork at any future resale. Gateway Art Sales provides a COA with all Original Artworks, Limited Edition fine art giclee prints and Open Edition fine art giclee prints.
What are Giclee Art Prints?
Archival quality prints. The word giclée is based on the French word gicleur, which means "nozzle" (the verb form gicler means "to squirt, spurt, or spray"). Prints are imaged using archival pigment inks for long life. Giclee prints have one of the highest degrees of accuracy and richness of colour available in any reproduction techniques resulting in extremely high visual quality with seemingly continuous tones without dots, lines or barring.
What are Limited Edition Art Prints?
Limited Edition Prints confirm the number of works made after the original, which makes the image more exclusive and therefore more valuable. The price can vary depending upon how many of the limited edition have been sold and how many are still available for purchase. For very popular work the market price can rise over time, if demand outstrips supply. Each print in the edition will be numbered, signed by the artist and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity confirming details of the print.
What are Open Edition Art Prints?
Open Edition Prints are not confined by a predetermined print quantity. They can be printed in any volume and continue to be reprinted over time. This means they are generally not as valuable as limited edition prints due to being more readily available. They can be produced in exactly the same way as a limited edition print but they won't be individually numbered and signed by the artist. The price will be determined upon the popularity of the print. A Certificate of Authenticity confirming details of the print may be supplied if the printing style is of superior quality, unlikely if its a standard poster print. All Of Gateway Art Sales' open edition prints are giclee prints and come with a certificate of authenticity signed by the printer and the artist.
